Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project:
The purpose of my Genius hour was to help the community and by doing that Paige, Amanda, Tia, and I decided that it would be a great idea to help our local animal shelter. We tried to volunteer at the shelter but never heard back from them, nonetheless we still went to visit the cats and dogs to give them the attention that they deserve. The main purpose of our Genius Hour was to raise awareness to the local animal shelter by telling to adopt instead of buying a new puppy, adopting gives the animals in the shelters a second chance and hopefully they will find their forever home. This is why we choose to have a bake sale and to sell bath bombs, we want to support our animals shelter and try and help all the furry friends find their furever home.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey?
The process of my Genius Hour took some thinking and eventually Paige, Amanda, Tia and I decided it would be a great thing to help our local animal shelter with anything they needed help in for example walking the dogs. Before we started to raise money for the Animal Shelter we decided to go visit and sign up for volunteering. Sadly you had to be 16 years or older to volunteer so Paige couldn’t, But Tia, Amanda and I did. We still got no call back so we didn’t get to volunteer like we had hoped to.
After we hadn’t got a call back from the Animal Shelter we all got together and came up with ideas to raise money that we could donate. Our first plan was to make blankets but that seemed to take up a lot of our time and it was hard to get together and do that when 3 out of the 4 people have jobs. After thinking we came up with the idea to make bath bombs and have a couple bake sales where we could also sell the bath bombs. Our goal was to raise about $250 dollars that we could donate to the animals shelter.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be?
Before we started our Genius Hour I never knew how many animals get euthanized each year in shelters and when I did my research I knew this is what I wanted to do my Genius Hour on. Me and my partners got together and thought of ways we could raise money for our local animal shelters and how we could raise awareness about euthanization around the world. So before I started my Genius Hour I wasn’t aware of what was happening in other animal shelters.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why?
If I could do anything different with my Genius Hour project I would probably try to get more active with what we were doing and reach out to the community more. Also by spending more time at the animal shelter to see if they did need any help even though they never got back to us when we tried to volunteer.
The reason I said I would reach out to the community more is because we only sold here in the school and never got the chance to go somewhere there was more people to raise awareness about our local animal shelters. I also wanted to volunteer and help out but as I said before they never contacted me to help them in anyway. \
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments.
As I stated earlier in this reflection Paige, Tia, Amanda, and I had a bake sale twice this year and had made bath bombs to sell also. In the beginning we set an amount that we wanted to raise and donate to the animal shelter, and we passed that amount after the second bake sale we had.
Our main goal of our Genius Hour was to help volunteer at our local animal shelter and have bake sales and sell bath bombs to raise money for them that they could use. We also wanted to raise awareness that not many animals shelters that are non- euthanasia. Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. This is why we did our Genius Hour.
